From Menara Airport to the Medina
Three ways to cover those 6 km. The "official" taxi stand is rarely the cheapest. Here's what to pay, who to trust, and how to avoid the most common tourist scam in Marrakech.
The distance
Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits 6 km southwest of the medina walls. From the terminal door to Jemaa el-Fna (the main medina square), expect 15-25 minutes in light traffic, 35-45 in heavy traffic.
Option 1: Official airport taxi (beige petit taxis)
Typical fare: 100-150 MAD (~€10-15) daytime, 150-200 MAD at night (after 20:00).
How to find: Exit terminal, cross the road to the taxi rank. The taxis are small, beige-colored, with "petit taxi" markings.
How to pay: Insist on the meter ("compteur" in French). If the driver refuses, walk to another taxi — there are always more.
⚠️ The meter-refusal scam: 80% of airport drivers will try to negotiate a fixed price instead of using the meter. Fixed prices are always inflated — typical "offer" is 200-300 MAD, sometimes 400 MAD to tourists who look lost. Always insist on the meter. If they refuse, say "no thank you" (or "non merci") and walk to the next car. The third driver will use the meter.
Option 2: Private transfer (pre-booked)
Typical price: €15-30 for a standard sedan, €35-50 for a minivan (4+ passengers).
Best for: Families, groups, late-night arrivals, first-time visitors who don't want to negotiate.
Where to book: Your riad/hotel (most offer transfers for €15-25), or via third-party booking sites.
The advantage isn't just price — it's that the driver meets you at arrivals with your name on a sign, speaks English, knows exactly where your riad's drop-off point is (critical in the medina where cars can't enter), and gives you a fixed price with no negotiation.
Option 3: Bus 19 (airport shuttle)
Fare: 30 MAD one-way, 50 MAD round-trip (ticket valid 2 weeks).
Route: Airport → Gueliz → Jemaa el-Fna (final stop).
Frequency: Every 30 minutes, 06:00-21:30.
Where: Exit terminal, bus stop clearly marked. Buy ticket on the bus.
Reality check: Bus 19 is fine but only worth it if you're budget-conscious and traveling light. The bus stops at Jemaa el-Fna, but most riads are a 5-15 minute walk into the medina from there — which means dragging your luggage over cobblestones. If you have a checked bag, the €10 taxi difference is worth it.
The medina drop-off problem
Most riads in the medina are on pedestrian-only streets. Your taxi can't drive to your door. Instead:
- The taxi drops you at the nearest accessible point (often a gate or small square)
- The riad sends someone to meet you with a hand-cart for luggage
- You walk 3-8 minutes through the alleys to your riad
Critical: WhatsApp or call your riad 30 minutes before landing. Give them your flight number. They'll arrange the pickup point and send someone. Without this, you'll be standing with your bags in an unmarked alley looking for a number that may not exist.
Late-night arrivals (after 22:00)
Late taxis charge +50% after 20:00 officially. In practice, drivers "forget" the meter and quote fixed prices of 250-400 MAD. Options:
- Pre-book a transfer — your riad's driver meets you, no negotiation needed
- Use Careem — Morocco's answer to Uber. Download the app before you fly. Fares are metered automatically.
- Take the official taxi — insist on the meter, expect 180-250 MAD
Most medina riads include airport transfer in the room rate (or offer it for €15-20). Check your booking notes.
Compare hotelsReturn trip to the airport
Easier than arrival. From the medina, your riad can:
- Call a taxi (metered) — 15-30 min notice
- Arrange a private transfer (€15-25) — fixed price, no stress
- Walk you to the nearest taxi stand
For 6:00 AM early flights, pre-booking a transfer the night before is the move. Taxis are scarce at dawn in the medina alleys.
Scam summary
- ✅ "Meter please" — never negotiate a fixed price for metered taxis
- ✅ 100-150 MAD is the right fare airport → medina during the day
- ❌ 200+ MAD = overpaying
- ❌ "The meter is broken" = get out, find another taxi
- ❌ "This is the only way to your riad" = lie, there are thousands of taxi drivers
